Heroes: Welcome Back

By Lisa Fary

Cake fixes everything.

When I’m feeling poopy, baking usually gets me out of it.  I like to bake cupcakes while wearing a multi-colored, swirly skull cap that makes my head look like a cheerily frosted cupcake from a Dr. Suess book.

Sylar got his cheery cupcake in this episode.  After rooting through a human lie detector’s brains, he’s confronted with her obnoxious office sunshine committee, bearing birthday cake and smiles.

Until Sylar rises from behind the woman’s desk, hand covered in her blood and brain bits, gleefully exclaiming, “Cake!”

I’m so glad he’s back. And also glad he’s not being taken so bloody seriously!  I actually guffawed at that scene and again at his elevator scene.  Not in the bad way, either, like I’ve been laughing all season.

Also back this episode is Hiro, for a minute until Papa Petrelli interferes and leaves him hanging.  On a pole.  On the side of a building.  A whole bunch of floors up.  Without powers.  Sixteen years in the past.

On another note, does Pinehearst not have a single hot nurse in its employ?  They had to send the creepy, scaly monster guy in to inject that Marine with Red Promicin?  Really?

Actor Chad Faust was an appropriate choice for the Marine test subject, though.  His pre-injection interview with the Flying Senator could have gone like this:

Flying Senator: Why do you want to be a superhero, son?

Marine: I’ve been there before, sir.  I survived basic cable.  Was on a show that wasn’t as loved as this here Heroes, sir.  But, we weren’t as hated, either.  I believe you fellas got some of your season three concepts from my old post, sir.  The 4400? Promicin?  Sound familiar?  Ours was neon green, though, which I understand is totally different, sir.

I didn’t think Heroes could be like this again, but I was blown away by this episode.  The only weak part was Matt and Daphne in the search for Isaac’s sketchbook.  Matt says, “You’re a good person!” and Daphne’s daft smile says, “I am what you tell me to be!”  The same daft smile crept across her face when she took down the runaway bike messenger, as if to say, “I have pleased The Matt!” That couple is an episode of Dr. Phil waiting to happen.

Lisa Fary's earliest influences are Princess Leia, Rainbow Bright, Astronaut Barbie, and her 6th grade teacher, Ms. Palmer. She's angry that it's 2011 and she still doesn't have a hovercraft, but will accept a jetpack as consolation. That jetpack had better be pink with a rhinestone monogram.

I'm glad Sylar's back too. And I'm glad shiz got done and Arthur Petrelli, aka gigantic plothole, is dead! Hurrah!

But I have a question: if A. Petrelli went back to the past to steal Hiro's powers, how did he get there in the first place? Did he already have part of his powers from the Africa incident? Could he only go back in time and he needed to steal Hiro's powers to go ahead in time? Did I miss something crucial in the plot of Heroes? (That's not too suprising, I've been watching the past couple of shows while reading a magazine.)

Bending time and space was part of the Peter Petrelli Super Saver Power Package that Papa picked up several episodes ago. Peter had absorbed that ability from Hiro waaay back in season one, then Papa, in a supreme jerk move, stole it all in a deceitful hug. Evil hug.

Rhea, I think Arthur originally stole the time travel power from Peter, who had absorbed it from Hiro last year. (Or was that season one? I can't remember anymore.) Sucking Hiro's power directly may or may not enhance Arthur's ability to control it, but it sure as heck stops the kid from following him.

I haven't seen any of The 4400 — please don't stone me for it — so the whole enhancing-military-personnel storyline reminded me of "The Initiative" from Buffy season 4. I was half expecting Marc Blucas to show up during the training sequence. (Not Leonard Roberts, though. That would've been really confusing.) I mean, they even stole the thing where the camera swoops underneath a glass table to look up at a handgun from 'Restless'.

Thanks guys! What a duh moment for me though, I should've remembered that. So A. Petrelli wanted to take Hiro's powers so that Hiro would be stuck in the early 90's? I mean if he already had it…what am I doing? Plothole Man is gone! I should just be happy right? Right.
