FABLES Comes to TV
ABC is adapting Vertigo’s comic book series, Fables, for television.
The network hasn’t made a series commitment, but has made a pilot commitment with writers/producers Stu Zicherman and Raven Metzner and director David Semel.
Zicherman and Metzner told Hollywood Reporter that they set up a structure to allow any fairy tale character to show up in any one episode and that the characters “are just like real people in the real world who live and breathe and look just like you and me.”

Hurray! This is exciting news.
Or, rather, it is exciting news that makes me apprehensive. I'm sure it will be like any other TV adaptation where there are some things that fans like and other things that we don't. But, maybe it will turn out like Hellboy. Hellboy comics, Hellboy movies, and Hellboy animated projects live in three creatively distinct worlds and they are all wonderfully enjoyable.
Who else around here reads Fables? I think it is terrific. It is interesting that with all the crime and horror stories I read this fairy tale series is my favorite funnybook.
I haven't, but the covers always draw my attention whenever I'm in the comic shop. So, you'd recommend it? Is it about actual fairy tale characters that already exist, or are they original characters in fairy tales of their own?
PS – I'm not really a fan of DC, but I'm a Vertigo whore.
I love the covers. They are done by James Jean and he does beautiful work. Sadly, he feels it necessary to move on and spend more time promoting his fine art. I wish him the best, but will miss him dearly.
The characters in Fables are the fairy tale and nursery rhyme characters that we are all familiar with. You will immediately recognize the Three Little Pigs, Beauty and Beast, Frog Prince, Goldilocks, the Dish and the Spoon, and the cow who jumped over the moon.
However, they have been living in New York for a couple hundred years now, so they have continued to grow and develop in their own ways. Plus, the tales that we pass down through the generations may not have been able to hold on to the entire story.
King Cole has generously served as mayor of Fabletown for many many years, and although Snow White is deputy mayor she really runs the show. She kicks ass by the way, and looks great doing it. The Big Bad Wolf, Bigby as we call him, has been enchanted with the ability to take human form, so think of him like a werewolf. He functions as sheriff and loves to give Jack a hard time. Jack is all of the Jack's. The magic beans, the candlestick, the kissing the girls and making them cry, yep it's all him. He is a constant schemer and an excellent character.
Oh! And Cinderella. I love her! Besides being one of Prince Charming's ex-wives (Cindy, Snow and Briar Rose meet for lunch once a year, it's great) and runing the finest shoe shop this side of Bullfinch Street she is a secret agent that goes on undercover missions across the globe!
Because it is published by Vertigo there is seemingly some kind of requirement to throw in some racy material once in a while. Like Prince Charming being a womanizing pig, or Pinocchio lamenting the fact that he is a real boy, and will always be a real boy and never get laid.
There have been over six years of stories and I would gladly tell you about all of them, but I'll wait and let you decide if it is worth your money. It took over a year of me being pressured by the staff of the local comic shop before I began reading. They all read it and want everyone else to do the same. I'm glad I eventually joined in on the fun.
