Beyonce + McG = Wonder Woman?

By Lisa Fary

Beyonce as Wonder Woman? McG directing?  WB, why do you hate me?

Truthfully, I’m not horrified at the prospect of Beyonce as Wonder Woman. I’d be concerned that her star would overshadow the Amazon princess, but otherwise, I kind of like the idea.

Yes, I know Beyonce is black.

Sue Storm isn’t Latina, yet Jessica Alba was cast in the role. Mind you, Alba’s suckage as Sue Storm has nothing to do with her Latina heritage and everything to do with lack of acting ability.  Saying Beyonce can’t play Wonder Woman because she’s black is kinda like saying Orson Welles couldn’t play Othello because he was a white dude (and yet he did, and did it well).

Of course we hold our comic book movie casting to a higher standard than Shakespeare.  I’m just saying be open minded.  Besides, Beyonce has got to be better a better choice than Megan Fox.

Just what is the argument for casting Megan Fox as Wonder Woman, anyway?  I mean, besides the fact that she’s brunette and hot?  Wonder Woman is so much more than that and I’m not convinced Fox could pull off the role for a couple of reasons:

Megan Fox is pure sex, but her physical presence doesn’t project Amazon power.  Wonder Woman, even in her drawn form, has a silent strength about her.  Playing second fiddle to Shia LaBeouf and bending sexily over the hood of a muscle car isn’t power- it’s being a prop.

Megan Fox isn’t an ass kicker. Whoever gets cast as Wonder Woman has to be an ass kicker, otherwise it’s just fueling fanboy fantasy that has no basis in, like, acting or action ability.  I’m sure the next dark-haired babe to titillate fanboys will be tossed around message boards as a WW casting possibility, too.

Steel (1997)However, I can be persuaded. Give me a good reason why Megan Fox would be a good choice for Wonder Woman.  And don’t say “She looks like Wonder Woman!”  I think Shaquille O’neil as John Henry Irons put that argument to bed a long time ago.

What does bug me is the prospect of McG directing.  When I first read it, I though, “Yeah, McG!  McG of Chuck and Supernatural – two shows that rock!”  I even said as much to John, who replied with, “Also McG of Charlie’s Angels 2, Pussycat Dolls: Search for the Next Doll and the Americanized Spaced.”  (BTW, McG’s Spaced was dumped by Fox – I never thought I’d be so thrilled to hear that Fox killed something).

I’ll know more about my McG-Wonder Woman feelings after seeing Terminator: Salvation.  His past directorial exploits have been over the top, super shiny, and rather juvenile.  It is possible that his style has grown up, but I’ll believe it when I see it.

All of this talk and speculation makes me long for the Joss Whedon Wonder Woman that never happened.

Lisa Fary’s early exposure to classic Battlestar Galactica in 1979 is largely responsible for her lifelong interest in science fiction and her childhood ambition of being an intergalactic space cowgirl. She thinks diagramming sentences is a fun alternative to Sudoku.

Lisa Fary's earliest influences are Princess Leia, Rainbow Bright, Astronaut Barbie, and her 6th grade teacher, Ms. Palmer. She's angry that it's 2011 and she still doesn't have a hovercraft, but will accept a jetpack as consolation. That jetpack had better be pink with a rhinestone monogram.
