Yeah, the article I cited does make it clear this is a recent development. Here: >>>Some in the audience are making it personal, against the Democrat. I don’t think he ever initiated much of this stuff – Palin certainly has – but he’s been content to let it happen up until now. But as he’s clearly not going to win, and as he’s still got a job in politics, I think he’s decided not to give himself a black eye w/ the new administration. Or maybe he simply felt that kind of behavior was demeaning. Or maybe it’s part of some kind of good cop/bad cop strategy.

Still: Credit where credit is due: for whatever reason he’s not acting like a tool

My understanding is that this is a relatively new development. At the time I wrote this, McCain had made no such statement. I saw footage of this on the Rachel Maddow Show on MSMBC about an hour ago – McCain scored some points with that. Oh, not enough to get me to vote for him, but certainly enough for me to think that he’s a decent human being.

Just for the heck of it, I decided to look up the article you cited above (or one like it covering the same incidents) and found the following:

“No, ma’am. He’s a decent, family man, a citizen that I just happen to have disagreements with (him) on fundamental issues and that’s what this campaign is all about.”<<<

All of which to me means that Mr. McCain clearly doesn’t have the support of his own party here.
