Dear Em,

First, thanks for the feedback, I'm always interested to hear what other fans think, even if they don't agree with me. As for your comment about Dean being empathy-free, your examples are good ones. Of course Dean has always had feelings, feels things deeply, worries about the people he was trying to save. And then he hid this from the world, doing his best to come across as a rough, tough guy who was more interested in guns and stuff than people's emotions.

I meant that in relation to Sam, who I think of being full of empathy 24/7 and then expresses this, Dean is empathy free, never showing most people his true colors (except for Sam and Dad, of course!). But in this episode, it changes, in particular in that scene with Meg, instead of being full of bluff and bluster, dealing with a ghost in his usual, businesslike and huntery style, he seems to be empathizing with her more instead of just shooting her. I mean, right? He talks to her for ages before trying to shoot her, and seems to feel bad about having to do it.

When did he start caring about ghosts? When they started laying on guilt trips as Meg does, but even guilt trips don't usually get to him like they do here. He starts relating to Ron, and Hendrickson in just the same way. What ever happened to the shoot first, deal with the emo later style that Dean usually employs? I think it has to do with his time in hell, that he came back with bits of him connected to other bits so that yeah, when some ghost is trying to make him feel bad, it works.

The scenes with Meg, and Ron, and Hendrickson show an extreme contrast to his previous behavior, the contrast was marked enough for me to consider that if he's FULL of empathy now, he was empathy free before, at least in the behaviors he demonstrated. Hope that helps!

Best Regards,

Dear Isabella,

I don't hate Bobby, I just hate it that Show is padding the script with scenes with him in it, that could be done just as effectively if they'd used either brother. Bobby's become a crutch and I can't enjoy his character properly when they do this at the brothers' expense. Thus, if they'd use less Bobby, and less Ruby, come to that, then the brothers could spend more time together, which it sounds like you want as much as I do. As for Sam/Padalecki, he deserves to be gushed over, especially when I'm in the mood for Dark!Sam. (Which has been happening a LOT lately!)

Best Regards,

"Meg’s pouring on the guilt, and the once empathy-free Dean is crawling both literally and figuratively. When Meg brings up the fact that Dean and Sam allowed her to remain possessed until they could get what information they needed from her, you watch Dean’s face. He’s not just sorry, he’s grief-stricken and regrets all of it. I especially like it when he says, “We did the best we could,” right before she smacks him to the ground. Dean’s gone to hell and come back, you see, and now he’s got all these feeeeeeeeeeeeeelings. It’s marvelous."

Empathy-free? Would that be the Dean who felt so badly in episode 3 of Season 1 that they hadn't managed to save enough of the victims(he was the recipient of the first "We can't save everyone" line:).

The one who understood so clearly why Haley, in episode 2 of Season 1, needed to get out there and find her missing brother?

The one who took so much more care with the emotional state of a child he barely knew(Something Wicked, Season 1) than his own father had with him?

The one who was sitting there beating himself up over the fact Meg had died and he'd had to shoot that other demon and kill the host in order to save Sam(Devil's Trap, Season 1). Watch his face when Meg is dies, that doesn't look like someone who was "empathy-free".

The one who wondered aloud if they'd killed other things that didn't deserve to be killed in Bloodlust(Season 2), after just one experience with a "good vampire"? The one who bonded so immediately with Ronald while Sam acted like he could barely stand the sight of him. The one who so quickly got over any animosity he could have had towards Henriksen in realizing he was a good guy trying to do his job to protect people.

And so on and so forth, all through all three previous seasons. Dean has never been empathy free. His feelings in this episode certainly have nothing to do with his time in Hell. Honestly I don't know how anyone could watch this show closely and believe Dean was either empathy-free or lacking in deep feelings towards those affected. He was the one, out of the three of them(John, Dean, Sam), who put "saving people" first in the hunting equation, who in the second episode of the show talked about how he did it so other families wouldn't have to suffer like their's did.

Also it appeared to me that as soon as they found out the demon had possessed a real girl(namely Meg) that is when Dean insisted they do the exorcism. They had no idea she was a possessed human before Bobby told them in DT. So it's not a fact that they left her possessed until they got the info they needed from her, they exorcised her as soon as they realized she was a possessed girl.

Your hatred of Bobby and constant gushing over Sam/Padalecki kind of ruined this recap for me.

I miss brotherly interactions, lately Sam is off with Ruby and Dean with Bobby or Castiel and as much as I like Castiel, I really want the brothers to talk. Dean was dead and came back from hell and it feels like that is being ignored.

Dear Amalthia,

Thank you for your support! I would love to have seen Jess, and what about that guy who drowned in Dead in the Water. Heck, lots of people drowned in that one, so we could have had TONS of watery ghosts coming back to torment the boys. But maybe Show didn't consider that.

Best Regards,

Dear Tonia,

That's very interesting news! It would have been so cool to have Sam be confronted by Jess. because I think she would have had TONS to say to him. All bad, of course, heh heh heh.

Dear Sylvia

:-) Yes, I meant their emotions....HE HE...But now that you mention the 'other' laid bare...

Sorry, I had to go there.

Anyway, you are so welcome. Yes, I do love this show. And, I am sure it comes across in my posts.

Your comment about the world ending made me smile. HE HE.

Yep...Jensen as an angel! Can you just imagine? YUMMY!

I am also looking forward to seeing where Jensen and Jared end up after the show finishes it's run but I am not ready for that to happen just yet. Kripke says he has enough 'story' for five seasons so the CW BETTER give him the opportunity to let him finish out the Winchester story or I will be an unhappy woman.

It's Thursday...........

Take care

Wonderful review as always. I was personally hoping they'd bring back Jess! but oh well...this was more of a Dean episode anyways. :( though honestly Meg rocked it out of the ballpark. And I totally agree, too much Bobby.

Dear Robin,

Interesting. So my fangirl wishes and geeky dreams are to be answered. Only not in the way I had thought. Possibly Bobby's character was on screen, because Mr. Beaver's contract stipulated so much screen time and they had to give him that before he went to his new show? (Just guessing here.) It sounds like for a while we're going to get a lot of dominance and dynamic tension between Dean and the soap angel, which, yeah, I would pay good money for. I hope Sammy is not out of the picture TOO long, my heart will start aching for a glimpse of Samhair....Thanks for letting us know all of this!

Two things are going to happen that will change things on the show--for now.

1. Jared is re-doing scenes for FRIDAY THE 13th and has to take some time away from SUPERNATURAL.

2. Jim Beaver has a role on a new TV show which will force him to take time away from SUPERNATURAL.

What this means is that we're going to be seeing a lot more Dean-centric eps with Castiel as his "partner."

Sam's going to take center stage very soon. It's my understanding that, in the mytharc of this season, it's going to be 50/50 Sam and Dean.

Dear Tina,

Yes, there does seem to be a dearth of Sam and his inner workings, which confuses me because he is supposedly a central and important character. He's Dean's brother, for crying out loud! There's not enough connection between the brothers as it is, and now Sam's getting the raw end of the deal. I hope Show changes its perspective soon about this, otherwise, things are going to get very lopsided.

I will definately be sharing my views on the next ep, which I will be watching (fingers crossed) spoiler free. Until next time, then!

Best Regards,

Yes, there does seem to be a dearth of Sam and his inner workings, which confuses me because he is supposedly a central and important character. He’s Dean’s brother, for crying out loud! There’s not enough connection between the brothers as it is, and now Sam’s getting the raw end of the deal. I hope Show changes its perspective soon about this, otherwise, things are going to get very lopsided.

I will definately be sharing my views on the next ep, which I will be watching (fingers crossed) spoiler free. Until next time, then!

Best Regards,

Dear Beth,

Hey, thank you for enjoying my reviews! It's always a pleasure to share my passion for Show.

Clothes and Bobby, like, WORD. Too little on the one hand and too much on the other. Although I do agree with you about the reconnection, I think there should be many brotherly fights first! Then, the reconciliation, with Bobby far, far out of the picture. (I love your holiday analogy!)

Pie, yes, Dean should at least remember the trouble with the pie, what is he thinking? I am enjoying the running joke, though, but Show should have Dean remember that pie is nothing but trouble!

Take care, and talk to you next time.

Best Regards,

Dear Tonia,

You are more than welcome, and thank you! I watch Show as a fan, and very much enjoy getting feedback like this.

The whole deal with Bobby, you're right, it doesn't ring true. The brothers can be at odds, fine, but Show should SHOW them being at odds, and demonstrate how their relationship has changed, rather than just putting them both at separate ends of the room, just talking about the gig. Dean was DEAD, and Sam is far too connected with his emotions (or was) to deny that fact. I can't imagine him ignoring it for very long, that's not what we've been taught to understand about Sam's character, he never lets sleeping dogs lie, so why now, why with THIS? I'm completely flummoxed by the whole matter, sounds like you (and MANY fangirls) are too. Show needs to get a clue that fans know these characters like the backs of their

collective hands, so Show can't go messing around unless it's with good reason, which I've not yet seen. Whew! End of rant. (Except to say that yes, Sam needs to have more focus on him, especially his Samhair, not to mention what's going on in his head!)

As for Dean's emo, I thought it was in character because the way I figured it, him being in hell changed him, so it made sense to me. Although I can see why you were peeved with the way he treated Sam in the car, not seeming to care. Maybe he's keeping Sam at a distance?

I totally agree with you about Madison - that dream sequence would have been BETTER had she been the focus on it, so much so that I wished I'd thought of it! The whole thing with Bella, sure, it was funny, but it was out of character. There's no WAY he would ever have the hots for that chick, not after what she pulled. Show was messing around and not staying

true to what it had established for Sam, tsk tsk, Show.

Sam's not jealous, per se, but I think he's confused, honestly confused, because HE's the one with the faith and all, so what's up with that. Not jealous, not of Dean, no. Never. Never? Heh heh.

Rock, paper, scissors, yes! Good call! Still confused about the fact that they're sleeping on the floor. Part of me thinks it was a budget thing. Easier to put the camera in place, and film a long shot of soap angel in the kitchen, rather than set dressing another room.

I love the pie joke! As for your compliment? Yeah, you MADE my day! I wish I could write for Show, too, because believe me, I'd put in ALL the good stuff, and leave out the boring stuff, have many more flashback eps, at least one with The Dad in it, throw Bobby and Ellen and Jo and Ash in for spice, and voila! We'd all be having a much better time, don't you

think?

Best Regards,

Dear Joan,

The year the boys don't look good is the year the world ends. I'm just saying.

I like your comparison of Dean to the soap angel - Dean would be tough, wouldn't he. And
yeah, both Ackles and Padalecki do so well in these roles, I'll be sad when Show ends, but
I'm looking forward to see what else they can do, and who else they can build chemistry
with.

But in the meanwhile, Show needs to have Sam and Dean on the screen a) alone together, b)
interacting about their issues, of which there are many. That's why we love Show, right? To
see them, as you say, laid bare. Um, their emotions, I mean. That's what you meant, right?
RIGHT?

I love your passion and your enthusiasm and your feedback and look forward to enjoying
Season 4 with you! We can put up with too many commercials as long as we get enough
brotherly love!!

Best Regards,

I liked this episode but Sylvia your bringing up what is again bothering me about the show, yet again not dealing with Sam, over and over again , this is what happened in season 2 and its enough already.
I love Dean but please Sam the other one.Iloved Meg in this always loved her character and Hendrickson although he did try to smash the pretty that is Sam.
Castiel I like but not enamoured with yet but we shall see.
I shall not be watching this weeks but interested to see your views on it?

Hey Beth, "waves"
I just have to say how much I agree with you that it would have been so much more effective having the brothers reconnect and rebond in the first episodes only to be torn apart later. You just nailed what I think has been mainly bugging me about Show so far.

Sylvia. I forgot to mention how excited I was to see Meg back again. She was and still
is my favorite female character. She is strong and interesting and I love her! She set
the bar so high that I believe no other female character since has been able to live up
to her.
