No matter what side of the registration debate you supported during Marvel’s Civil War, you have to admit that the 50 State Initiative idea Tony Stark, Hank Pym, and Reed Richards came up with was a solid one. A superhero team in each of the 50 states there to protect that state’s people and deal with state-specific issues and problems. Every state can handle its affairs in the way that’s best for them with one common goal in mind: a better country.

Geeks For Obama needs leaders! We’re looking for people in as many states as possible to head up the Geeks For Obama effort in their state. Being a state’s Geeks For Obama leader would involve being the liaison between me and their state’s team, being the go-to person for all of their state’s donations through the Geeks For Obama effort (mainly by starting a fundraising page at www.barackobama.com, and making sure that all donations and entrance fees for fundraisers are charged through that link) as well as organizing a team in their state’s efforts. These geek-focused efforts would include:
- voter registration drives in places like comic shops, movie theaters, and gadgety-type stores
- organizing fundraiser screening events where you get people together for something like a Buffy Marathon, or an anime festival or whatever, and charge people admission – proceeds of which would go to the campaign
- looking into how geeky businesses in their area can get involved
- organizing something like a “Obama Wednesday” – Wednesday is new comic day, and geeks who sign up with Geeks For Obama would agree to donate whatever they were going to spend on comics that week to the Obama campaign
And much more!
Geeks For Obama leaders would also be in regular touch with me over the next two months, hopefully brainstorming new ways and incentives to get geeks involved in the campaign and to the polls Nov. 4th!
If you think you’ve got the chops to lead a super-team in your city or state, even if you’ve never done anything like this before, e-mail me at geeksforobamany@gmail.com.
Your country needs you.

TERESA JUSINO was born on the same day that Skylab fell. Coincidence? She doesn’t think so. As a writer, her work has appeared in Elmont Life newspaper, and on the sadly defunct website, CentralBooking.com. She is currently at work on a collection of short stories. As a geek, Teresa loves Star Trek, Lost, comics, and anything Joss Whedon ever touched. Also, she has a fangirl *squee-ing* crush on Brian K. Vaughan, which is now being rivaled by her burgeoning crush on Robert Downey Jr. in his Iron Man suit.
