Strong Bad’s Cool Game for Attractive People: Episode 1

By The Cowhat Ninja

Guess what? Along with loving anime, I can often be called an avid gamer.  In fact, I’m so avid that I have to lock up the video game systems in order to get any real work done!

I’ve been playing some games with my recently acquired Nintendo Wii ™.   But because of my low budget, I have to pick and choose carefully between games.  And my choice of Strong Bad’s Cool Game for Attractive People, which can be purchased via the Wii Shop channel, did not disappoint.

Truth be told, I’ve been waiting for this game since I first learned of its being made many months ago.  For those of you who are unawares, the video game is based in the world established by the many flash cartoons at Homestar Runner.  The bad grammar and a sharp wit which is found throughout the site have kept me on the edge of my proverbial hilarity chair for many years, and when I found out they were making a game for the WiiWare™ it pretty much sealed the deal on which next gen entertainment system I wanted.

The game itself is full of references to the cartoons, some of which might fly over the heads of people not already familiar with the cartoons, but should spark an interest in the series as a whole for those previously unawares.   You play as Strong Bad, the ever-suave shirtless Mexican wrestling-mask and boxing glove wearing bad guy of Free Country, USA.

The gameplay is pretty simple; you use the wiimote to guide Strong Bad through his various trials and tribulations.  You can click on stuff to get SB to comment on whatever it is you’re clicking on.  You can also interact with famous characters from the cartoons, such as Homestar, Marzipan, Coach Z, Bubs, Strong Mad, The Cheat and others.

Along with the main plot, you can complete side quests such as trimming hedges into awesome shapes, draw Teen Girl Squad comics and collect various pieces of clothing to wear in the photo booth.

The game didn’t have any technical issues present enough to really bother me, but there were times where I was wandering around because I wasn’t quite sure what I was supposed to do next.

Overall, I had fun playing it and I can’t wait until the next installment!

Strong Bad’s Cool Game for Attractive People is available for Wii and PC. Buy it at Telltale Games. Or, try before you buy with a free demo download of Episode One. Also available via the Wii Shop Channel.
