Geeks for Obama #1: Save Our Government, Save the World

By Teresa Jusino

Geeks of America! Pause that DVD of Battlestar Galactica!  Hold off on the Star Trek vs. Star Wars argument for JUST ONE SECOND!  There’s something important under way, so pay attention!

I was thinking recently about the WGA Strike; about how when the writers’ chips were down, fans came out in droves to support them by doing amazing things.  Letters were written and e-mails were sent.  Food drops were organized and petitions signed.  Money was donated and blog posts were written.  You organized quickly and efficiently, and thanks to your efforts the writers were bolstered; the networks, advertisers, and the general public took notice; and the strike ended favorably.  I was thinking about the existence of the film Serenity; about how fans put their money where their mouths were by buying the DVDs, spreading the word, and making Firefly such a success even after its cancellation that Universal had to make a movie version!  You should be proud!  I thought to myself, imagine if the same time and energy were put into other things…there would be nothing we couldn’t accomplish!

Geeks of America, the United States of America is up for cancellation.  You heard right.  The country that you love is at risk of having the plug pulled on it.  The Powers That Be have decided that, rather than giving it a chance to get better after eight years of switching time slots and never letting it find a voice that worked, ratings weren’t high enough to warrant keeping the country on the air.   Instead, they’re thinking about replacing it with a crappy reality country.  I hear it’s called The Best All-Time Disasters or America’s Funniest Long-Term Wars or something.

We cannot let this stand.

We have to let the Powers That Be know that we want a smart, well-written, character-focused country!  We have to let them know that we won’t settle for mediocrity – not when we’ve suffered through so much crap already!

We need someone capable in charge.  Someone insightful enough to balance what the fans want with what the country needs.  Someone who will make our country the one to watch again, both domestically and internationally.

That someone is Barack Obama.

I hear there’s someone else running for the top spot – some zombie named “Undead Grampers” – and the Powers That Be are backing him big time.  They seem to think that the viewers don’t care.  They seem to think that audiences are stupid, and that they’ll put up with poor quality time and time again.  We have to show them they’re wrong.

Enter GEEKS FOR OBAMA.

Geeks For Obama is a geek-specific, pop culture-friendly grassroots organization for geeks all across the country hoping for change this November.  There is power in numbers.  There is also less likelihood of laziness and procrastination if there are other people e-mailing you or calling you giving you jobs or asking you for suggestions.

The point is, we need to unite and fight – the same way we do whenever a television show gets cancelled or our beloved writers are unemployed – because we’re talking about the cancellation of something much more important.  Progress.

As a writer, her work has appeared in Elmont Life newspaper, and on the sadly defunct website, CentralBooking.com. She is currently at work on a collection of short stories. As a geek, Teresa loves Star Trek, Lost, comics, and anything Joss Whedon ever touched. Also, she has a fangirl *squee-ing* crush on Brian K. Vaughan, which is now being rivaled by her burgeoning crush on Robert Downey Jr. in his Iron Man suit.
