Sylvia Bond is a ten-year technical writing veteran with too many degrees under her belt to count. She lives in Colorado, but does not ski, preferring instead to spend her money and time at the annual Great American Beer Festival, taking road trips across the United States, and reading historical fiction from the comfort of her fluffy green arm chair. She has been involved in fandom since 1993 and been writing fanfic since approximately 1993. What she finds most amazing about fandom (besides the open heartedness of fans and the sheer amount of creativity) is how visible fandom has become. "In my day," she says, "we had to hide behind P.O. boxes to get fanfic. But nowadays, people wear t-shirts that shout their affiliation and share their shiny toys on the internet." It's a wonderful world.

I once read a fill-in fan fic in which Meg entered Sam’s body when he took a bathroom break during his and Dean’s stop at a Texas diner. She stripped Sam naked, chained him to the bathroom wall, raped him, then entered his body with her final kiss. It was a very erotic, dirty tale. Loved your review, Syl, and agreed with every word. I love EvilSam, love his violence, sensuality and cruelty. I think Padalecki deserved an Emmy for this performance, too; he was THAT good. Love, Robin
Dear Robin,
He surely did deserve an Emmy, I’m all for that. Too bad I wasn’t in the voting body, or he would have gotten one! Thanks for enjoying the review!
Best Regards,
Sylvia
Oh yes! Another one of my favourite episodes! *shut up – they’re not all favourites. honest*
But seriously, this was a goodie and no.1 reason? Sam going bad. It was such a departure for him and JPad, that it was a brilliant, wonderful surprise because it was done so well. Up until then I didn’t know the boy had it in him, and boy does he ever!! With Jo and the beating of Dean… As you say, one feels a little squirmy detracting from the main story of this episode, and how much we learn about the boys, their past and their relationship – but god, Jared Padalecki is hot when he’s bad. And so, so huge!
After reading this, I watched the ep again – that scene with Jo? Wow. He’s sitting and he’s still bigger than her, and her teeny, tiny hand just disappears under his. Self defence classes? Bah. If a man that size has you and uses his full strength? Not much you can do about it. Having said that, I’m totally with you on the “why is that so damn sexy?!” Cause it shouldn’t be…
Um, so yeah. A great episode. Wonderful angst. Gorgeous brothers. Brilliant review.
Dear CatsbyCat,
I’m so glad you enjoyed the review and that you “got” what I was trying to say.
It felt like such a fine line I was walking writing about the bar scene. If Sam/Meg wanted it, he could have taken it (and not EVEN tapped in on his/her demon strength). I should have felt indignant about that, rather than revel in the power and majesty of the thing. Like watching Mt. St. Helens blow, and feeling terrible about people dying…while at the same time being amazed at the awesome POWER of the thing! But I feel as if I’m preaching to the choir here, we are so not alone in feeling this way about the hotness of Mr. Padalecki when he’s a bad boy. I’ve always had it for bad boys, but he really takes the cake in this ep. He’s got it in him and then some!
Best Regards,
Sylvia
Born Under a Bad Sign was the first episode where I realized that Jared P. could be sexy. Until then, I just was amazed by his incredible physique, but didn’t feel any kind of lust for him. But I’m into d/s and have long since moved past the point of agonizing over the “why” and “is it normal/bad/sick.” I, like many, many other women, enjoy d/s (or even forced-sex fantasy) as a FANTASY and can enjoy the eroticism of the implied force, knowing full well that such a thing in REALITY would be repugnant. I think women should stop beating themselves up over the things they find erotic and should stop worrying about why.
Research shows that a huge difference between male and female sexual arousal is that men are more aroused by visual stimuli and women are more aroused by situational stimuli, the backstory in otherwords. That’s why porn geared to men is meagre on the plot and heavy on the T & A. Women need a plot, a situation, for arousal. Perhaps because we’re just a bit more complex . Sometimes, that situation that we find arousing might be one of force. So long as it is fantasy, why not just enjoy it?
