She has been involved in fandom since 1993 and been writing fanfic since approximately 1993. What she finds most amazing about fandom (besides the open heartedness of fans and the sheer amount of creativity) is how visible fandom has become. "In my day," she says, "we had to hide behind P.O. boxes to get fanfic. But nowadays, people wear t-shirts that shout their affiliation and share their shiny toys on the internet." It's a wonderful world.

Dear Sylvia;
I completely agree with everything you stated in your first paragraph. It is exactly the same way I feel about this particular episode.
This was the episode when I believe Jared found his footing. His acting was excellent and he really scared me.
He actually caught me off guard because I wasn’t prepared for what Jared did to me in ‘Born Under a Bad Sign’.
And, poor Dean. I am sure this one episode in particular destroyed him inside. How could it not?
BTW – On the TV Guide website, our boys were voted the top two sexiest Sci-Fi Stars in a reader’s poll. Jared was #2 and Jensen was #1. I couldn’t agree more!
Take care
Joan
Great review. This is one of my top 5 eps that I can rewatch over and over.
I adore the scene when Sam hands Dean the gun and asks him to shoot him. I’ve rewound that 30 second bit untold times. I totally focus on JA’s face when he says his speech about keeping Sam safe/I’d rather die”. He owns that scene.
Dear Pat,
My only regret in writing about this ep was that with my word limit I had to decide…bar scene or handing over the gun scene in the motel. The bar scene won, but that doesn't mean that particular scene didn't rock because it DID. And does. And for the reasons you mention – Ackles himself, and that cold, stone sure look on his face when he says that line about dying. I totally buy it, and believe him utterly. It's such a great ep not just because of the great acting, but because it says so much about Sam and Dean as brothers.
Best Regards,
Sylvia
love the review. this is one of my favorite episodes ever and i feel the exact same way about the bar scene including the whole feeling bad about enjoying it so much.
Meg is one of my all time favorite demons so to see her come back in this incarnation was very entertaining.
Yes. Exactly. This is definitely my favorite episode of the series(which is saying A LOT). Jared was just brilliant. And I’m glad I wasn’t the only one that got a little worked up during the bar scene.
Dear Joan,
I think Padalecki blew the roof off with this one, and I think you’re right. He really aced it and found his footing and every marvelous thing an actor can do. This was “his” episode, and I couldn’t take my eyes off him. Naturally he’d be in the top five sexiest stars. Naturally! I’m very glad to hear it, thanks for letting me know!
Best Regards,
Sylvia
Dear Miss Kitty,
And here’s me not even mentioning Meg when she’s my favorite demon of all time too! I figured it might go without saying, but I think I dwelt on Sam-I-Am (and Padalecki) to the point where our beloved Meg got short shrift. Sorry about that!
At any rate, yeah, the bar scene. I can’t tell you how many times I re-wrote those paragraphs to get them just right because to paraphrase Meg, I didn’t want someone to think I was a freak! It’s not wrong to respond to power, but it’s damned hard to admit it!
Best Regards,
Sylvia
Dear Michelle,
I think if we went crawling through the woodwork, we’d find a whole lot more fangirls who feel exactly the same way about Mr. Sweet and Innocent but Sometimes Masterful When Possessed Sam Winchester. He’s always a bit of a dark horse, and it was nice to see this character flung full out and in charge of it all. Whew! Padalecki rocks at this, and that’s all there is to it!
Best Regards,
Sylvia
This episode really upped the ante and yeah EvilSam was incredibly hot and the bar scene had me on the edge of my seat. I never felt that kind of tension (well excpet in Devil’s Trap and you know what scene I’m thinking of) but this time it was Sam!
Loved your review!
Dear Amalthia,
Yes, indeed I do know the tension you speak of in Devil’s Trap, there’s not many scenes like that one! It’s marvelous to see Sam that dark, he’s quite, quite interesting that way. I’m glad you enjoyed the review!
Best Regards,
Sylvia
