Black Canary Barbie: Heathen Tramp

By Lisa Fary

For the low price of $39.95, your little girl can grow up to be an S&M tramp, just like Black Canary Barbie!

Black Canary Barbie

Black Canary Barbie, a Black Label collector’s edition, is due for release this September. Although it appears to be a faithful adaptation of the DC heroine, Christian Voice has a problem with the doll. A spokesperson said:

“Barbie has always been on the tarty side and this is taking it too far. A children’s doll in sexually suggestive clothing is irresponsible – it’s filth.”

Because no Barbie has ever worn sexually suggestive clothing, fishnets, or black leather. . .

Christian Voice has a bigger problem, though: their leadership can’t read or conduct basic research.

I’m drawing that conclusion because The Barbie Collector website clearly states that Black Canary Barbie is for the adult collector, preferably age 14 and over. This is not a children’s doll.

Also, Black Canary Barbie is a Black Label Barbie, which means it was created specifically for adult collectors. Bob Mackie’s 1980s Cher Barbie was Black Label and makes Black Canary Barbie look positively demure.

The Devil is in the details, so I suppose that’s why Christian Voice didn’t bother with those.

Lisa Fary's earliest influences are Princess Leia, Rainbow Bright, Astronaut Barbie, and her 6th grade teacher, Ms. Palmer. She's angry that it's 2011 and she still doesn't have a hovercraft, but will accept a jetpack as consolation. That jetpack had better be pink with a rhinestone monogram.

Finally, a voice of reason, from someone who actually knows how to read and do research. THANK YOU

GAH. I never knew that Cher outfit I try to block from my mind was immortalized in doll form.

I’ve seen that before on the Non-Gaming Discussion of HERO Games Forums and as was pointed out (not by me), she’s hardly S&M Barbie – the lack of whipe, thigh boots with seven inch heel black, leather catsuit and domineering sneer was cited. The Catwoman Barbie is closer to S&M/Fetish Barbie.

Biker Chick Barbie – at most.

My image of S&M Dominatrix Barbie (with Submissive Ken) really would have got those idiots at Christian Voice frothing at the mouth. Heels, fishnets, leather zip front body, horsewhip, hair up in a really severe braid – and Ken on a leash.

I know, I know, I’m going to Hell. But at least I’ll be warm – and in good company.

It looks like Christian Voice didn’t specifically level the S&M charges against Black Canary Barbie, but mainstream media outlets like Fox News are calling her look “S&M” (which, as you point out, isn’t really S&M). It’s baffling those ninnies at Christian Voice are making a stink about this particular Barbie when they could be making a bigger stink about their only conservative presidential option being John McCain.
