“Is this an example of your bedside manner, doctor?” - Becky, Invasion of the Body Snatchers

Dr. Horrible: Geek Generated Content

By Lisa Fary

Maybe we geeks should just produce our own entertainment and leave the studios and networks out of it.  Seriously.  Those twerps cancelled Journeyman.  Could you imagine the studio that would greenlight something like Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog?

I mean, really?  The video blog of a hapless supervillain in love?  And a musical at that?

At best, Fox would do it brilliantly and cancel it after one episode.  At worst, the Sci Fi Channel would (A) insert a crappy CG monster or Baldwin (and not in an ironic, funny way) or (B) dole it out in thirty second spots for the next three years while figuring out how to milk the last dregs of Battlestar Galactica for every possible cent.

Yet, there was Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog on the internets, all hokey and goofy and music-y.

And awesome.

Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog is pure, unadulterated geekiness for geeks by geeks.  Download it to your iPod and watch it on the morning train.  Go ahead and snort while laughing at it.  Sing “A Man’s Gotta Do What A Man’s Gotta Do” while dumping out your office trash.

Or watch it in the privacy of your own home.  Just download it and support geek generated content!

Lisa Fary’s early exposure to classic Battlestar Galactica in 1979 is largely responsible for her lifelong interest in science fiction and her childhood ambition of being an intergalactic space cowgirl. She thinks diagramming sentences is a fun alternative to Sudoku.

    God I love sardonic wit.

I’ve already watched the first segment at least half a dozen times in the last 24 hours, and each time it just gets better. I notice nuances I’d missed before because I was laughing too hard. And, as with all of Whedon’s writing, it has become instantly quotable among my geek circle.

I can hardly wait for part two to premiere at midnight.

    SQUEE!

See, my favorite song is the Freeze Ray song…

    “Like your hair”

    “What?”

    “No, I…mean I…like the air…”

    Anyway…

    :)

Neil Patrick Harris kicks major ass in this, and Nathan Fillion is hilarious. Can’t wait for Act 2 tomorrow…

My favorite quote? “The world is a mess and I just need to… rule it.”

A close second? “Captain Hammer: Corporate Tool.”

Everyone has already said what I wanted to say. I honestly can’t stop watching it, I just want to download the songs and have them on iPod to listen to on repeat.

“The World is a mess and I just need to rule it” needs to be on a shirt stat!

I loved it, found it very funny and can’t wait for the next installment.

And then I thought “hey I’m going to support this, for once someone is thinking about users all over the world, it’s fantastic”… that is until iTunes told me it wasn’t available in the UK -_-.

So, I guess Mr. Whedon made the same mistake as all the usual networks, he forgot that the planet is more than 300 million peoples, in fact it’s about 7 BILLION peoples, a whole bunch of them ready to spend their money for something like this. In fact I would bet that the number of people outside the US ready to spend money on this is far superior to those inside, if only because there is simply more of them.

So well done on the show, but very badly done on thinking “WORLD WIDE WEB”.
