Presidential Geek Survey Diary – Day 326

The religious right is feeling left out of the race and ignored by the GOP.  The religious right stamps it’s feet, pounds it’s fists on the dinner table, and screams, “POOPY!”

Welcome to my political life, Religious Right.

I’m a single woman who co-habitates with my boyfriend and has no intention of getting married or having kids of my own (although adoption is on the table down the line).  I’m college educated, debt-free (except for a graduate school loan), and don’t own a house.

I am politically invisible. I’m politically expendable.  In the American political scheme, I may as well not even exist. (I am, however, needed for my tax dollars).

Now, with John McCain as the presumptive Republican nominee, with the California supreme court overturning the ban on same-sex marriage, and with the GOP’s new  American Families agenda – which is economically based rather than morally based – the religious right is feeling neglected, as if they don’t exist.

It appears that pandering to the religious right is no longer the way to get elected.

And it’s about time.  I’ve spent my entire adult life watching politicians pander to so-called moral and social issues that do nothing to address the true problems in this country: school prayer, gay marriage, intelligent design, etc.  Guess what?

  • Preventing same-sex couples from getting married won’t reduce the heterosexual divorce rate.
  • Overturning Roe v. Wade won’t help families get healthcare.
  • Forcing kids to pray in public schools won’t reduce overcrowded classrooms.
  • Teaching creationism anywhere other than in a mythology or world religions class will not increase public school students’ achievement in science.

So, thank you, GOP, for finally getting your head out of your butt.  You can’t turn one group’s moral values into laws for the entire country.  Now that you’ve taken a break from oppressing same-sex couples, can you do something about gas prices?  Or food prices?  Or something that effects us all?

Lisa Fary's earliest influences are Princess Leia, Rainbow Bright, Astronaut Barbie, and her 6th grade teacher, Ms. Palmer. She's angry that it's 2011 and she still doesn't have a hovercraft, but will accept a jetpack as consolation. That jetpack had better be pink with a rhinestone monogram.
