Cylon Says – BSG: Escape Velocity

by Lisa Fary

Another stellar week for the women of BSG!

Last week, Cally went out like a bitch. This week. Chief pooped on her memory. Loudly. In a bar. While people looked on uncomfortably.

Baltar’s Babes got brutally beaten up by the fringe group The Sons of Ares, while Baltar hid. But, later he told the Babes they were perfect just as they are, which totally made them feel pretty.

President Roslin attempted to revoke the colonists’ right to peaceably assemble – in the name of public safety – by heavily guilt tripping the Quorum of Twelve.

The move was thwarted by Apollo, who may actually be on a path toward redeeming his prior douchey behavior by standing up for freedom and the law. If the show goes past Roslin’s impending death, I expect to see Apollo in a much more powerful political position – maybe vice president under Zarek or even president.

In the meantime, I’m waiting for Apollo to stumble across a warrant-less wiretapping program.

Also, Starbuck sweatily slept, Tory got freaky all around, and Six made out with Saul Tigh (after beating him up).

Anyone ever notice how much Six resembles the late Mrs. Tigh? It’s uncanny. So uncanny, in fact, that John has theorized that Ellen Tigh was actually a Six who managed to age. Could Ellen Tigh be the final Cylon?

Despite my complaints here, I was riveted by “Escape Velocity” and experienced minimal outbursts of sarcasm. It was dominated by human drama, but it was drama that consistent with the characters and, even though it didn’t move the larger plot forward, it forced the characters to genuinely grow.

That’s good television.

Lisa Fary's earliest influences are Princess Leia, Rainbow Bright, Astronaut Barbie, and her 6th grade teacher, Ms. Palmer. She's angry that it's 2011 and she still doesn't have a hovercraft, but will accept a jetpack as consolation. That jetpack had better be pink with a rhinestone monogram.

I always disliked Tigh because I had officers who were senior to me, but they needed me to do their dirty work! Glad I was a senior Warrant Officer and I would tell them what I thought!

That did suck. A lot. Although I did find it intriguing that he mentioned Sharon. But that probably will go nowhere.

  3. Alpha-Girl says:

Given his newfound cylonitude, Chief is probably able to relate to Sharon in a way he couldn’t before. Also probably meditating on the chances of two people who didn’t know they were cylons getting together and falling in love.

I got the feeling that the Chief’s words, while true, were only half the story. He’s not lying with all the resentment, but it’s just what he wants to believe to be in less pain–that that was all there was. What better way to have people think that and stop treating you softly than to bring up the ex?

He loved Cally. Whether it was better, worse or just different from loving Boomer doesn’t matter. He’ll regret his words having so much impact, but he’ll realize they were said in pain to alleviate pain and he’ll eventually do her memory justice. (Perhaps by killing her murderer?)
