The Star Trek novels were much better before Paramount started vetting them – Barbara Hambly, John M Ford, Diane Duane…awesome stuff!
Also…dirth? AKA dearth?
Yeah. I suck at spelling. It’s been pointed out many times…
Sorry about the spelling miss – we really should have caught that. Actually, I did, but then got sidetracked by something shiny and then forgot to make the change.
Oopsie.
But more important than spelling…
How exactly does a dog bark portentously??!!
Actually, the only reason dogs don’t bark portentously in things I write is ’cause I have trouble SPELLING portentously!
Portentous is just one of those words that looks like it’s been spelled wrong no matter how many times you look at it. I’ve looked it up, and I’m still convinced that it’s missing a letter somewhere at the back end…
I agree 100%. Although there were a lot of ‘crappy fanfic’ style novels for Trek in the old days… I just read Triangle and oy, a bigger Mary Sue Fic I have yet to read…
I’m going off to weep over the literarily mutilated francise, now.
I know! I thought it was “portentiously”, myself. Clearly, that’s wrong…but it looks like it needs an “i” in there…
Sadly, this phenomenon is not limited to Star Trek. I’ve read samples of some Buffyverse tie-ins on Amazon that made me cringe. The authors just didn’t grok the characters’ voices or the tone of the show. In fact, I remember one that referred to a vampire having been “embraced” rather than “sired”. (As I suspected, s/he had done a lot of work in the White Wolf series.) Professional writers really should have to pass a test or something before they’re allowed to mess with our fandoms like that.
