MissKitty, today's Mormonism may not be a cult, but the early church definitely was. All the classic signs were in place: the charismatic leader, the isolation from society, the belief that theirs was the one true religion, etc. Unlike some other Christian faiths whose origins are a bit misty (Catholicism, for example), Mormonism has the unenviable distinction of being a religion founded by a proven liar and con man whose supposed history of North America is not only absurd but demonstrably false. The polygamist cult in Texas, while FLDS instead of the more mainstream LDS, was only following those rules and regulations set out by the religion's founder. That's why the "F" stands for "fundamentalist", which is another word for "orthodox". They have just as much claim to the term "Mormon" as any other branch of the church. Similarly, Islamic fundamentalists are still Muslims, and the members of the Inquisition were still Catholics.

Brian I know that these are all in fun and I normal enjoy your articles, but when your posting something as fact you need to do a little more research before. Those polygamists in Texas are NOT Mormon’s they are unfortunately a sick off shoot of our church. And I was really offended at you calling Mormonism a cult. We are not a cult, we are a legitimate Christian church.
