I know one other woman at my jobby job who admits to being a sci-fi fan and she's not nearly as vocal about it as I am. My X-Files buddy in college was not a sci-fi fan because she thought all sci-fi was like Star Trek. But, she loved the X-Files.

Excellent article and I believe Lisa made a valid point about "chicks". I can only speak from my own experiences but it's very rare to meet a "chick" (outside the internet) who is a sci-fi fan. And those that loved the X-Files would never call themselves sci-fi fans. After BSG airs (and the final countdown is just killing me!) the watercooler talk at work on Monday is me and 6 guys. I just found another chick at the office who's a BSG fan a couple of weeks ago so I'm thankful for that but we really are few and far between.

Jen, while you and I know that there have always been women who are science fiction fans, it's still often treated as a big surprise when women turn out to be science fiction fans. It's also been a demographic that the Sci Fi Channel has actively perused - it's been portrayed as some sort of revelatory new thing that women like BSG, when really, a lot of us have liked the genre all along. That's why I felt it was appropriate to ad the chick bit there. :)

Adweek ran an article about the so called phenomenon of <a href="http://www.adweek.com/aw/content_display/special-reports/other-reports/e3id1035c8742af5f4e733f9d304726b671" rel="nofollow">women tuning into the Sci Fi Channel</a> a couple months ago. It was very irritating, and <a href="http://www.pinkraygun.com/2008/02/08/the-sci-fi-channel-needs-women/" rel="nofollow">I had opinions about that, too</a>.

I love your response to David Eick, but was this line "[X-Files] also drew in viewers who weren’t necessarily sci-fi fans, including chicks" really necessary? Speaking as a 'chick' yourself here, even. There have been female fans of every Science Fiction show and, in many cases, the fanbase of female fans is as large, or larger, than the male fanbase. I would say X-Files is such an example based on what I have observed of the fanbase. So, nice writing, nice rebuttal, but ditch the bit about the 'chick'. We're not as absent as everybody wants to think we are.
