Article by Sylvia Bond

Sylvia Bond is a ten-year technical writing veteran with too many degrees under her belt to count. She lives in Colorado, but does not ski, preferring instead to spend her money and time at the annual Great American Beer Festival, taking road trips across the United States, and reading historical fiction from the comfort of her fluffy green arm chair. She has been involved in fandom since 1993 and been writing fanfic since approximately 1993. What she finds most amazing about fandom (besides the open heartedness of fans and the sheer amount of creativity) is how visible fandom has become. "In my day," she says, "we had to hide behind P.O. boxes to get fanfic. But nowadays, people wear t-shirts that shout their affiliation and share their shiny toys on the internet." It's a wonderful world.

    Hi Sylvia

Wasn’t this an awesome episode! It was right up there with Faith and Scarecrow for me. I have watched this episode and Faith more than any other from Season 1. All in all this was a phenomenal episode. A lot to take in….a lot to chew on….Several scenes still linger in my psyche….The scene with Sam and Missouri on the porch…the end scene with BDW…the scene in the motel room when you can feel Dean’s pain. But the two scenes which I remember the most are the one when their mom saves her sons and the gas station scene. The scene with mom I still analyze. What was she sorry for? Will we ever find out? Why did she treat Sam differently than Dean. But the gas station scene wrecks me every time. Jensen breaks my heart….shatters it into a million pieces when he calls his dad….I feel everything emotion he is feeling on the screen. That SCENE made me realize how incredibly talented Jensen Ackles is. It was this episode which made me a Dean Girl and it was this episode which made me realize that I was a goner. I knew I was hopelessly addicted and I still can’t shake my addiction to this show! Faith started me on that road and after watching Home I knew there was no turning back.

I love when the boys personal space is invaded…when they invade each other’s space. They treat each other with such respect and love that sometimes I feel like an intruder in their lives. I still want that reciprocal hug though………..

I also didn’t like the way Missouri treated Dean. I get so tired of people treating Dean like he is not intelligent or he can’t think for himself. It makes my blood boil. I am so protective of Jensen.

BTW – You sure know how to get to me….all of those sexy descriptions of Dean. He just exudes sexual power doesn’t he? My heart is in my stomach right now just thinking about him.

I am so glad you reviewed this episode. I was hoping you would. Season 2 had some awesome episodes as well.

I don’t know if you saw my comment I added to the JUS BELLO review. Our boys are coming back for another season. WHOOOOOOO!! More dithering…more brotherly love…..more sexy scenes. (I love the word dither)

    Until next time.

    take care
    Joan

Superb review, Syl, but then, it’s YOURS! I always figured Mary said, “I’m sorry” to Sam in this ep because she wasn’t around to watch him grow up, but now we know there’s a bigger, perhaps more sinister, reason for saying that. I hope we find out what it is! This was such a marvelous episode–Sam limpage, brotherly moments galore, the appearance of both The Mom and The Dad! I remember how stunned I was to see JDM appear, however briefly, that he was THERE, in town, and didn’t even see his boys! And after Dean’s impassioned, begging phone call! Worse was not coming to their aid when Sam called to tell John Dean was dying–but I suppose John knew Sam would find a way, with or without him. Always a pleasure to read your reviews, Syl! Hey, a month from now, if all goes well, I’ll be seeing Jared at Eyecon! Squeeeeee! Love, Robin

I’m so glad that I’m not the only person who really hated the way that Missouri treated Dean. He knows he attractive to women and that he’s a good hunter. Missouri makes slighting comments about both of these, saying he was a goofy looking kid and calling him an amateur regarding his hunting. She proceeds to call him unintelligent and implies that he’s only good for cleaning up. Given that she’s a psychic, surely she must have realised that he had a low opinion of himself. Not my favourite one-off character!

Wow it’s been a long time since I’ve seen this episode and I adored your review. you’ve captured all the stuff I loved about it.

    Dear Joan,

I do love your passion for Show and your attention to detail. And because you like the same things I like! The gas station scene was amazing, wasn’t it? It would take a person with a heart of stone to not be affected by it. Plus, Dean is so durn adorable when he’s flustered like that.

Thank you for your encouraging post. I am indeed planning on reviewing all eps from both Season One and Season Two. Intermixed with, of course, the NEW eps we’ll be getting for Season Three, AND, because we’ve been SO good, ALL of Season Four!!! It’s a wonderful world.

    Best Regards,

    Sylvia

  6. Sylvia Bond says:

    Dear Robin,

You know, you’re right. The Mom and The Dad were BOTH in the same ep and I never even picked up on it! Guess I was too distracted by Dean’s emo meltdown, or Sam’s long legs sprawled on the floor. It’s hard to pay attention when the mind is diverted by SO many wonderful things. Yeah, I hope we find out why The Mom was sorry. I’m sure you’re right in that it has to do with the YED. Fingers crossed that Kripke doesn’t forget how much we want to know! Have a wonderful time at Eyecon, and give Jared that kiss, okay?

    Best Regards,

    Sylvia

  7. Sylvia Bond says:

    Dear Ali,

Yeah, I have a hard time with Missiouri, too, on account of Dean just didn’t deserve all that meanness. Some have suggested that she was just messing with him and that he liked it. Others have said that maybe she was trying to distract him on purpose. All I know is it looked to me like she was playing favorites! Ah, well. I doubt Dean is EVER going to want to go back to visit her (being, likely, completely unaware of any of her motives), so it’s likely he won’t have to suffer through that again.

    Best Regards,

    Sylvia

    Dear Amalthia,

Hey, thanks for saying such nice things! Previous episodes have so many hidden things to discover, so many little details. Like the shirt Dean wears. What other man could wear purple so boldly?

    Best Regards,

    Sylvia

  9. misskitty says:

Wicked review Sylvia. Glad your giving us a little Supernatural in between episodes.
I wanted to cry when Dean called John and left that intense voice mail. and I think the dad screens all of his calls cause he at this point is trying to avoid his boys to find “the truth” and I don’t think he doesnt care he just is trying to keep them safe in his dumbass way. Cause they needed him at this point hence the dumbass.
Your not the only one who feels that way about Dean. And I agree what was up with Missouri and the Dean abuse, like the man needs it. sheesh.

  10. Sylvia Bond says:

    Dear Misskitty,

Hey, thanks! I’m glad you liked it!

John’s dumbass way? Girl, you got guts, because people have lost limbs for maligning John W. But, yeah, some of his decisions are baffling. I’m sure he’s got his reasons, or, rather, had his reasons, bless him.

Hang in there, the rest of Season Three is coming!!

    Best Regards,

    Sylvia
