Review: Sequential Suicide – Slop
by Lisa Fary
Slop is really disturbing. The collection, published by 803 Studios, is an anthology of shorts centering on Remus, a pig farmer with a nasty habit of murdering hookers and feeding them to his pigs. The most horrifying part is that the stories in Slop are inspired by an actual guy. Robert Pickton, the Canadian pig farmer who was convicted of killing six women, but is believed to have actually killed around sixty.
Each story takes a different perspective on issue. One focuses on a group of hookers who know about Remus and, every once in a while, encourage a newbie hooker, usually a runaway, to service him. Why? Because it tides him over and keeps the other girls safer.
At least, you never really feel sorry for Remus. He’s not given much of a motive – there’s a bit about a woman who left him, but it’s not enough to reconcile the monster he is. He’d get along well with the House of 1000 Corpses family.
But, Slop isn’t just a sloppy portrait of a serial killer or re-staging of the Pickton murders. The writers and artists tackle all aspects of the story from the law trying to catch him to just who is affected when a prostitute never comes back from a trick (the saddest drawing of little kids holding stuffed animals you’ll see today).
Slop is a worthwhile read - if you can keep your stomach from turning.
