Peggy - I'm not so sure about B5 anymore. I remember watching it in the 90s and thinking it was the most awesome sci-fi show ever, but I recently started watching them again and it's. . . well, it was painful. At one point I said being digested by Sarlaac would be preferable to watching another episode. John convinced me to just skip ahead to season two, which was better, but still awkward.

I'm someone who loves Babylon 5, but even I've got to admit, there's a lot of bad on that show. It was awesome fifteen years ago - today, I don't think B5 would make it.

And I'm right there with you on Steve Bacic. Love him.

Mr. Obvious - I had a lot of complaints about Flash at the beginning - I don't deny that. But, it has improved significantly, and in my opinion, has redeemed those early episodes.

"Flash Gordon just sucks"

Just because Gillian Horvath makes a shinny spot on this turd doesn't mean it smells better.

What Horvath seems to be missing is that individual long story arc episodes have to entertain in and of themselves to keep us coming back. Bab5 had a long story arc, but I was almost immediately sucked in to the series. It didn't matter that the arc was five years long because the smaller stories were interesting and I liked the characters.

One of the problems I had with the Flash Gordon premiere is that it didn't seem to know whether it wanted to be a cheesy over-the-top comedy or a drama, so it ended up neither. There was no chemistry between the characters and Ming didn't seem particularly merciless. And I found the inclusion of the obviously-token-black-friend to be insulting. And it's not that it's campy - I love Dr. Who and was a Xena fan for years - it's that it's not campy enough. I watched the first four episodes or so and it just didn't grab me. Now I watch the occasional Steve Bacic scene, because, let's face it, he's a lot more interesting (and better looking) than Flash.

Hooray! I've loved Gillian Horvath's work ever since Highlander. It's great that the Flash production team managed to snag her for the long run. Like many other commenters around here, I've noticed a great increase in the quality of the storytelling since she signed on. Here's hoping the trend continues.
