But you're missing the point. Whatever else this episode was, for British men of any orientation this is Kylie and Dr Who. But I am getting a little bored of all the unrequited love. Just because this was ignored for the first 40 yrs doesn't mean you have to make up for it in the first few yrs of the new series. He loved Rose and she loved him, please leave it at that. If Donna starts to fawn over him this new season I may gag.

Actually, Ms. Minogue got her start as an actress on the Aussie soap "Neigbours," so she could always act a little. And we were all pleasantly surprised with Billie Piper's cross-medium abilities. I thought the part was written rather thinly, and without being snide at all, I think Kylie is a little too old to be given these little girl spunky miniskirt parts--she looked out of place and uncomfortable. Why not give her something of substance, a position of power, rather than someone so obviously beneath the Doctor, as the female companions so often are, infantilized and patronized? Why not have someone behave like a grown-up and want to see the stars? That's part of what made Mme. de Pompadour so compelling to me--a woman in charge of herself, self-aware and bursting with agency. To dress up a 40 year old woman like a teenager--are knee high leather boots really regulation uniform?--and make her prance around being breathily impressed with everything the Doctor touched was odd, to say the least

Maybe I'm just easier to please, but I liked 'Voyage of the Damned'.

Okay, so it's not quite as scary as 'Blink' or as epic as the last three episodes of series 3, but it was still a pretty decent Christmas-themed TV movie. And Kylie Minogue far surpassed my expectations for her as an actress (based on previous dreadful attempts at acting by other pop singers). In fact, I would've liked to see Astrid survive and go off with the rescue ship to start having adventures of her own. Oh well.

I will admit to missing Martha, but that's simply because I adore her as a character. It's comforting to know that she isn't gone from the Whoniverse forever. Can't wait for series 4 to start over here in the States.

I am 100% in agreement with you - I was beyond excited about watching this (esp. since there is absolutely no new American tv), and I actually found myself getting bored. Yet further fuel for my belief that Russell T. Davies should stop writing episodes and leave it to better men like Steven Moffat.
