“Every time I think this show has grown a pair,” John grumbled as Tom Baldwin miraculously breathed in and ripped off his bandages to show that he had been healed by Shawn, “they crawl right back up into the body cavity.”
For a whole second, I thought Tom was dead, but then I thought, “Wait. This isn’t Heroes. This is The 4400 and they like to play the ‘it was all a silly dream!’ card”.
What if Tom had died? Then Megan and Diana could team up to run NTAC and save the day. That wouldn’t be bad. The blond gal is a decent actress and Diana has much more chemistry with her than she has with Tom.
Megan and Diana in charge could work. Marco the Tech Cutie could be their puppy.
But, Tom lived and for the first time all season, he got to do some acting. So did everyone else. Even Isabelle.
OK, what was with the Isabelle Rampage of Doom? She’s throwing people against walls, throwing fireplace pokers into bad guy guts, and killing people slowly and painfully. Shouldn’t she be able to close off blood vessels and kill people quietly? Her dad could do it.
The body flinging is more impressive and exciting, though. I get that. What don’t get is after the Rampage of Doom, Isabelle had to use the door knob to open the door where Tom and Collier were tied up (you just had to keep Billy Campell’s shirt on for that, didn’t you, USA!).
At least Isabelle finally had a reason for existing.
What I don’t get is why the entire season couldn’t have been like this episode. It was tense, stuff happened that moved the story forward, characters died and there was actual acting going on. I gave a damn about who lived and died tonight, whereas last week, I just wanted them all to die.
After the Tom Baldwin non-death, The 4400 grew a pair.
I haven’t heard about a season five, but the finale felt like it could go either way. There’s an opening to bring it back, but if not, it’s still a satisfying way to end it. Half of Seattle is dead, the surviving half all have abilities, Jordan Collier is in charge while the city is under quarantine and Seattle has been re-named Promise City.
If The 4400 does come back for a fifth season, it’s got to be bigger and more tense, delivering the same quality as this episode and staying away from that “4400 of the week” format because that’s gotten old and tired and lame.
As much as I’ve complained this season, I would like to see The 4400 come back next year, but it’s got to get a different opening song.
And Billy Campbell has got to shave and get his shirt off.
