Iowa senator Tom Harkin held his annual steak fry this weekend where he featured the Democratic presidential candidates (as speakers, not as lunch).
However, Harkin did not invite Mike Gravel or Dennis Kucinich to the steak fry, prompting Kucinich to call out party leaders for “rigging the game” and to call out Iowa for getting all uppity about it’s early primary status.
In a recent press release, Kucinich said, “You would think that the Iowa Democratic Party leaders, fighting to preserve the state’s status as the first caucus state, would be a little more careful about giving other states the impression that they and they alone have the right to determine who the next President will be.”
Sounds like sour grapes, until learning that Kucinich and Gravel were the only two Democratic candidates who did not sign a pledge to campaign only in the first four caucus and primary states, which includes Iowa. And here they are, not invited to the Iowa steak fry.
Dennis and Mike, you’re always welcome at Pink Raygun. We won’t coerce you into signing a pledge and if we invite you over for steak, you can bet we’re not going to fry it because that’s an unconscionable thing to do to a perfectly good steak (we’d have some tofurkey for you, Dennis).
We will, however, ask you to respond to our Geek Survey before handing you the plate. But, at least you won’t be in Iowa. That’s not a bad trade.
