Review: Trailer Park of Terror

Trailer Park of Terror #3In order to be scared by Trailer Park of Terror, I think you have to have very specific conditions. It helps if it’s raining and the power has gone out, leaving you to read by candlelight and the glow of lightning. Or, if you’re camping (which I don’t do) and naturally very jumpy (which I am) and there’s a state prison in the vicinity.

I read issues one through four curled up with my cat in the middle of the day and listening to the soundtrack of Xanadu, occasionally jumping up from the couch to pretend I was Olivia Newton-John on roller skates.

It wasn’t exactly conducive to terror.

Trailer Park of Terror is a horror anthology in the same vein as Tales from the Crypt, except instead of the Crypt Keeper we have Norma tying the stories together. It’s hard to decide which character is more disgusting: the Crypt Keeper or Norma. On the covers, she drawn as a redneck babe, but inside the comics she’s a gross, scabby blob squeezed into a slutty dress.

Trailer Park of Terror #4Also like Tales from the Crypt, the stories in Trailer Park of Terror are pretty tame and kind of hokey, but occasionally disturbing. The one that sticks with me is about a pro-life hypocrite who winds up getting raped and impregnated by a demon and faces the choice he so violently wants to deny women.

I probably wouldn’t have bought Trailer Park of Terror if I hadn’t stumbled upon the Imperium Comics booth at the Comicon – I’ve never seen their comics in any of my local comic shops. But, now that I’ve read issues one through four, I’ll probably continue buying it once in a while if my regular comic shop picks it up or if I run into Imperium Comics at another convention. I like it, but don’t see myself going out of my way to buy it.

And next time, I’ll try
to create some slightly more terrifying conditions for my Trailer Park of Terror reading. Perhaps listen to some Barry Manilow.

Lisa Fary's earliest influences are Princess Leia, Rainbow Bright, Astronaut Barbie, and her 6th grade teacher, Ms. Palmer. She's angry that it's 2011 and she still doesn't have a hovercraft, but will accept a jetpack as consolation. That jetpack had better be pink with a rhinestone monogram.
