Kyle XY: Ghost in the Machine

I’m not the world’s biggest Kyle XY fan. I find the narration to be annoying, a lot of the acting to be stilted and of a level of quality usually reserved for amateur dinner theater, and the After-School special-ness of the episodes to be beyond cloying. In fact, I dislike the show so much, that it’s been several weeks in a row now that I’ve feigned death just to avoid watching it.

Oh yeah, and that Thinkle on Matt Dallas’ forehead (Thinkle=Think+Wrinkle). It looks like someone stapled a litter of Shar-pei puppies on to his forehead and trained them to emote based on fear of repeated beatings or food deprivation.

Thinkle Puppies

That being said, some of the aspects I do like about the show are the unique abilities that Kyle seems to have developed lately, the basic premise of the show and that the teens on this show look, act and dress like actual teens.

Okay, all that is now out of the way. What did I think of tonight’s episode, “Ghost in the Machine”?

Pretty damn good.

There was a real threat of danger built up inside the Zzyzx compound, made all the more real by Andy’s revelation to Josh during their count-to-three-and-spill-the-beans moment in the car. I honestly didn’t see that coming, and it felt shocking (as I’m sure it did to Josh) to find out Andy’s secret. I hope the writers can keep her upcoming storyline from getting maudlin, and treat the subject matter with the respect and sensitivity it deserves. More importantly, I hope that whatever the outcome of her storyline, that there is real character development and maturity given to Josh’s character.

The “meh” moments include Jessi XX’s revelation that she sees things inside the Zzyzx compound (exactly like Kyle XY does), yet Kyle XY simply dismisses it as gas. Or the effects of gas. Either way. And the four beers drunk by Lori Trager in a very short amount of time – she references them specifically, but I would think that to drink that much that quickly, there should be at least some evidence of a beer-bong nearby…

So, since it looks like I’m going to be watching the rest of this season unfold to see what happens, I’m going to reschedule my fake deaths for things other than Monday night at nine. Let’s see how the new Flash Gordon series premiering this week pans out…I may have a use for those deaths, yet.

Lisa will return next week with her usual reviews.

Lisa Fary's earliest influences are Princess Leia, Rainbow Bright, Astronaut Barbie, and her 6th grade teacher, Ms. Palmer. She's angry that it's 2011 and she still doesn't have a hovercraft, but will accept a jetpack as consolation. That jetpack had better be pink with a rhinestone monogram.
