Presidential Geek Survey Diary – Day 17

When asked by a blogger about his thoughts on human exploration of Mars, Mike Huckabee responded, “There are a few people I would like to send to Mars… on a one way trip… but I am not naming names.”

Huckabee went on to say that, as president, he would be interested in focusing on space for “everyday purposes, such as satellite based air traffic control.” When asked about replacing human space missions with robotic missions, the former Arkansas governor replied that “the best ‘robot’ is a human.” This is the kind of thing I want to see more of from the candidates – even if it isn’t exactly what I want to hear. I get that terrorism, heath care and the economy are immediate issues, but we have to take the long view of progress and survival as well.

So, Candidates, if you’re going to continue to avoid the Geek Survey, can you at least start publicly thinking about the space program? I want to go to space! I’m already saving up for my Virgin Galactic flight.

Oh, and this doesn’t have anything to do with anything, but Mike Huckabee is in a rock band called Capitol Offense, which I think is kind of cool. Can you imagine Hillary tearing it up on stage? You can see a short clip here.

Lisa Fary's earliest influences are Princess Leia, Rainbow Bright, Astronaut Barbie, and her 6th grade teacher, Ms. Palmer. She's angry that it's 2011 and she still doesn't have a hovercraft, but will accept a jetpack as consolation. That jetpack had better be pink with a rhinestone monogram.
