Hailey’s Comic – Week Seven

We were interested in seeing what a girl would like and dislike about comic books. 11 year old “Haileyscomic” recently started reading comic books and agreed to write reviews for Pink Raygun this summer. We set her up with a pre-paid account at the local comic book shop and every week, she has $10 to spend. This week, HC writes about Invincible #42 from Image Comics and Classic X-Men #1.

Invincible #42 June 2007

Invincible #42This is by far the most new-reader-friendly comic book I have ever read! In fact, in the back it had a recap of what has been happening in all the past issues. I was very happy about this because I knew that it would mean that I wouldn’t write yet another review saying ‘I didn’t get it,’ which I am VERY sick of doing!

This book is an new twist on old standard. I mean, a teen aged boy with super heroic powers – never heard that one before! But other than that, it was a very original concept. There are things like different “species” from other planets who all want to take over the world, and there was also a creative mission where the guy has to protect some astronauts while they are on a space travel expedition. Another reason that it was a new twist on old standards is that it had the art style of an older comic book which, of course, I loved!

Classic X-Men (reprint of) Volume 1 Issue 1

Classic X-Men #1This one was VERY cool to have because it was a reprint of the first ever X-Men. It was very interesting to see how the characters as I know them (mainly from the movies) and the characters in this book compare with each other. Well actually, there was a lot less character development that I had thought.

What I know of the X-Men and what I found in this were basically the same, which means that in the movies they were true to character. That, to me, is a very good feature in movies because it proves that the movies don’t go off with these wild things that are nothing like the books!

Another thing about it being the first one was that, because it is the first, every little detail is spelled out. Well, great! Now that I got one that I don’t need spelled out for me, it IS explained in detail! (Ha-Ha/grrr!)

About Haileyscomic: I am a girl but I’m not obsessed with how I look or what’s in style or anything like that. I am also not trying to be just like a boy. I like action-adventure, but not fantasy and magic.

Lisa Fary's earliest influences are Princess Leia, Rainbow Bright, Astronaut Barbie, and her 6th grade teacher, Ms. Palmer. She's angry that it's 2011 and she still doesn't have a hovercraft, but will accept a jetpack as consolation. That jetpack had better be pink with a rhinestone monogram.
