Presidential Geek Survey Diary – Day 12
Bill Richardson said “maricon” (a Spanish word meaning “faggot”) on the Don Imus show in March of 2006. At the time, Richardson made an apology to Equality New Mexico and, neither that group nor the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation pursued the slur as an issue. Now, 16 months later, it’s an issue (but, still not with GLAAD).
In other insensitivity news, Hillary Clinton may have used an anti-Semitic slur in an argument in 1974. And, sources indicate that in second grade, Barack Obama called a girl a “poopy head” at recess.
“I meant no disrespect to children who suffer from defecation disorders,” Obama said later. “I understand that it is a serious quality of life issue, but that girl really was a poopy head. She pushed me off the monkey bars. And I don’t mean anything by my use of the word ‘monkey’.”
OK, candidates, listen up. I get that the media likes to play the “gotcha!” game, but the Pink Raygun Geek Survey is carefully crafted to offer little opportunity for accidental racist, anti-Semitic, ethnic or sexist slurs. We’re not out to trap you; however your selection for your favorite superhero may go on your permanent geek record.
