Hailey’s Comic – Week Five

11-year old “Haileyscomic” has been updating Pink Raygun on what comics she’s buying, what she likes and what she doesn’t like. We set up a pre-paid account for HC at our local comic shop and every week, she has $10 to spend on any comics she wants (that are approved by her parents, of course). This week, she compares reading a Fantastic Four comic to watching the movie.

As you probably know, Rise of the Silver Surfer just came out, so I decided to re-watch the first movie and read a comic book to see which one I like better.

Fantastic 4 (the movie)

Fantastic Four - Extended Cut (Two-Disc Special Edition)Wow! Here’s a movie that has good characters, is really good for all ages, and is fun, but not stupid. I liked that this movie wasn’t always super serious, but still could be at times. That meant that it was good for my little brother, but was also good for me and my Mom (that takes a lot more balance than you think).

I also liked that it had a “strong girl saving the world” that wasn’t very girly. I liked Fantastic 4 enough that I would pay movie fare to see it in theaters, but I haven’t heard such great things about it [the new one]. So instead, I’ll eagerly wait for it to come out on video!

Ultimate Fantastic 4 #39

Every time I get contemporary comic book I get my hopes and think, ‘This one will be better. That other one was just bad.’ And almost every time, I’m disappointed.

Ultimate Fantastic Four #39Well, this time I decided I wouldn’t get my hopes up only to be disappointed again, but I actually ended up liking it. The first few pages didn’t make any sense and I thought that I would hate it because it wouldn’t make any sense. As it turns out, the first few pages were just setting up for the rest of the story. It may have helped that it was a part one, but I have picked other comic books because they were also a part one and haven’t gotten the same results. Finally! A contemporary comic book that I can enjoy!

And for the big comparison: book vs. movie (drumroll please)! Okay, I’m undecided. I liked them both for different reasons!

About Haileyscomic: I am a girl but I’m not obsessed with how I look or what’s in style or anything like that. I am also not trying to be just like a boy. I like action-adventure, but not fantasy and magic.

Lisa Fary's earliest influences are Princess Leia, Rainbow Bright, Astronaut Barbie, and her 6th grade teacher, Ms. Palmer. She's angry that it's 2011 and she still doesn't have a hovercraft, but will accept a jetpack as consolation. That jetpack had better be pink with a rhinestone monogram.
