We wanted to know what girls like and dislike about comic books, and we could have speculated and looked up statistics, but thought it would be more efficient to ask an actual girl. 11 year old “Haileyscomic” is a new comic book reader and is filling us in on what she’s reading this summer. This week, HC writes about Uncanny X-Men #487 and a Spider-Man trade paper back.
Uncanny X-men #487 August 2007
When I picked up this book I had not read any of the X-Men books, but I had seen all of the movies. That is one reason I was drawn to this: because liked the movies. I liked the art style quite a lot. It was crisp and realistic and it wasn’t hard to tell what was what going on, but I can’t exactly say the same for the story.
I really don’t want to write yet another bad review because I don’t want it to seem like I don’t like comic books (which I certainly do). But, newer comic books need to lighten up.
When I’m looking for new comic books, I spend a long time looking through the shelves because I have a hard time finding anything that appeals to me (and I go in with an open mind. I really do). But, when I’m looking through the long boxes I spend twice as long because if I had all the money in the world, I’d buy them all.
Amazing Spider-Man (I got one big book with ten stories in it so I decided to write a review for Spider-Man in general)

I am not one to go for popular things – I am probably the only 11-year-old in the United States that hasn’t read Harry Potter. However, there is one thing – it’s the thing that got me into comic books to start with. It is the reason you are reading these very words at this very minute! Although it’s popular, it’s my favorite. It ..is.. Spider-Man!
Spider-Man is my favorite because it’s humorous and it’s not too stiff when it’s serious. It is written in a way that’s easy to understand. I can always trust that I can pick up any book that I want and I will understand it. And if I don’t understand it, its simple enough that I can make a reasonable guess that is usually right.
About Haileyscomic: I am a girl but I’m not obsessed with how I look or what’s in style or anything like that. I am also not trying to be just like a boy. I like action-adventure, but not fantasy and magic.
