This summer, Pink Raygun set up a pre-paid account for 11 year old “Haileyscomic” at the local comic shop. Every week, she has $10 to spend on any comics she wants (that are approved by her parents, of course). For each comic she buys, HC will write up a review explaining what she liked, what she didn’t like and what she would buy again. This week HC picked up an issue of Supergirl and the Legion of Super Heroes and a few issues of Electric Girl.
Supergirl and the Legion of Super Heroes #26 March 2007
I think Supergirl and the Legion of Super Heroes was pretty good, but it does need some improvement. The story can be hard to follow because it keeps jumping back and forth and you have to really think about the storyline. This is not necessarily a bad thing, but it is certainly not a good thing either.
One thing that I liked about it was that it was not as stylized as a lot of other contemporary comic books. When I say that the art in Supergirl and the Legion of Super Heroes is not too stylized, I mean that it didn’t look like the artist sat down and spent five hours drawing each panel, like they were trying to make it look like a photograph, which is good for me, because in comic books I like the story more than the art.
Electric Girl Issues 3,5-10
I like Electric Girl because it is different from most modern comic books I have read. One thing that I liked was that it wasn’t very stylized (editor’s note: for Hailey’s definition of “stylized,” read the Supergirl review above) and it wasn’t about someone trying to save the world or something. It was just relaxed and easy-going. I think reading an Electric Girl comic book was definitely worth my time!
About Haileyscomic: I am a girl but I’m not obsessed with how I look or what’s in style or anything like that. I am also not trying to be just like a boy. I like action-adventure, but not fantasy and magic.

What a neat idea.
It’s funny, you’re right again. The comics I loved were pretty, and there were several artists I wanted to follow from issue to issue. But the stories were and are what matter. Overly detailed panels can detract from a story enough to ruin it. I believe comics are about imagination!
