Robert Rodriguez has signed to direct the remake of Barbarella, which is being produced by Dino De Laurentiis. Rodriguez said “Dino De Laurentiis came to me and said, Barbarella‘is a world where you are completely free to unleash all your fantasies, creativity and imagination-where the possibilities are limitless.’ I love this iconic character and all that she represents, and I’m truly excited by the challenge of inviting a new audience into her universe.”
De Laurentiis says “Barbarella is the ultimate science-fiction adventure heroine: smart, strong and sexy. In our vision, the future is female, and I can’t wait to introduce Barbarella to a new generation of moviegoers.”

I remember seeing Barbarella in a movie theatre when I was a kid. I was a bit young for it and thought it was bizarre. It will be in interesting to compare the old and new versions.
I’ve ALWAYS said the world needed a remake of Barbarella – NOT!
I’ve never seen the whole thing, just the opening credits when I wandered out my room one night for a glass of water.
The original is kind of wonderful in that camp, self-mocking 1960s way – cheesy but knowingly so. Not quite sure how you’d remake that today without it just seeming … wrong!
It will probably have a different overall tone, but still manage to be campy and fun. I have faith in Robert Rodriguez for that.
Uh…I thought this was a crappy movie the FIRST time. But I like Robert Rodriguez…especially after Planet Terror. So, we’ll see.
