Mary Jane: Natural Nerd Selection

Is there anything that doesn’t cause internet panties to bunch? What’s that? You don’t wear panties? Then something must have crawled up there when you wore that skirt the other day. Here’s another perspective on the Mary Jane maquette by Adam Hughes:  its a good thing for the preservation of our species.

A guy is going to spend about $125 on MJ. That’s $125 that isn’t getting spent on wooing the nerd girl of his dreams or his MySpace girlfriend or strippers. In my town, $125 will cover two or three dates because people around here aren’t nearly as well groomed or as well dressed as people who live in other cities. Even four star restaurants here will let you walk in wearing chino shorts and sandals.

Chances are, MJ isn’t the first maquette this guy has bought, and if it is, it’s probably not the last. That adds up to a lot of girls he’s not wooing, which significantly reduces his opportunities for reproducing his nerd genes, effectively removing him from the gene pool.

  1. Removing him from the gene pool. Priceless… :)

But while I’m not sure how I feel about the maquette, I know that it’s not insulted or offended. More sad, I think. Or disappointed. The thing is, teenage girls these days dress like this. I’ve seen it. Whether guys buy it or not is kind of irrelevant when girls keep doing it. It’s an accurate representation of what a teenage girl – even a “wholesome one” like MJ – might wear. Whether it’s a representation we like is another story, and its something that should be taken up with girls, not with the men who create these figurines…

  2. I agree with you. The girls get it from so many directions (including what they’re watching on tv and the music they’re listening to) and emulate it.

In Arizona, it’s so freaking hot that this sort of dress is practically a uniform for teenagers and their mothers (exposed thong season starts here around March and lasts until November).

  3. I rather like the statue…and no, I’m not a lesbian. I think it is pretty and I wish i could pull off the high sided thong straps like MJ. haha. She must have the worst wedgie ever….those straps or so dang high. But I digress, I like the statue. I won’t buy it for $125 bucks. When I open my own comic store…I will so want one though. :)

  4. I’m horrified when I see thirteen year old girls at the mall walking around like that, but contrary to my tone, I think that statue is kind of cute. It’s like a pin-up from the 40s or 50s. I also don’t find it demeaning that she’s doing laundry. That’s the kind of thing married people (or any one in a healthy relationship) do for each other.

Alpha-Girl is right about this being standard dress here in Arizona its to hot to ware very much. I wish that the little teenyboppers dress a little better. And doing laundry isn’t demeaning everyone’s got to have clean clothes.
But it really does seem like its made for guys to ogle at.
