He has a lot of pull there and a ton of knowledge a common Shepherd would not have. I think Mal lost his faith while fighting for the Independents, and Book found his faith while fighting for the Alliance. They are very ying-yang-ee, those two. I don't think Book was directly linked to any of the other characters before boarding Serenity, though. It just really frosts my cookies that we will never really know Books' story!
