Interviews from APE: Moderate Revolt

Moderate Revolt is a young arts collective with an eye towards other media making their convention debut at the Alternative Press Expo. We had a chance to talk to two of the members about Moderate Revolt and their artwork.

Christy: I’m Christy Negubala and I’m one of the artists for the Moderate Revlot.

Stacy: I’m Stacy Swan and not present is Cary Grafmiller, Joe Peeler, and Tess Blackwell and Grant Boomer.

Christy: Basically, we call ourselves the Moderate Revolt because it’s based on something John Stewart said during his stand up routine. He was talking about how our country is run by extremists and how they are the ones that make the rules. His hypothesis is that the people that are moderate, the normal people with good heads on their shoulders, all have shit to do. And so we are revolting, not neccesarily in the adjective sense, but we are the responsible moderate people that decided that we’re gonna try and take it upon ourselves to try and run this country in the right direction. It’s kind of a fledgling purpose that we have right now. We started a website and we’re starting with art, we’re gonna write, we’re gonna try to make music and see where we can take it.

PRG: What specifically do the two of you do?

Stacy: I have a comic book and prints that are available and the comic is a travel comic about a trip through Italy. And then the prints are from my personal stuff.

Christy: I make collages. I usually do it in either notecard or postcard form, but I’m hoping to expand it out a little bit. I’ve been making larger collages and they’re from everything from people interacting with one another to just random ships going on different directions.

Stacy: I think overall, we just wanted to make an artistic collaboration, get people together who have different ideas and have a modge podge of different people’s ideas and talents and be able to compile them all together.

PRG: How has the project been working for you so far?

Christy: This is our first trip to APE. This is the first time we’ve taken a foray into the public arena and it’s been working out pretty well so far. It’s also giving us a lot more confidence and I think we’re going to have a lot to write about after this.

PRG: Are you located in the Bay Area?

Stacy: We’re from L.A., so we drove up for the weekend. And actually, we’re al friends from all over.

Christy: Yeah, Grant is from Idaho, Tess is from Utah, a couple are located in Orange County.

PRG: And you’re being interviewed by people from Tucson! What do you do for day jobs? Are you artists by trade?

Stacy: I’m the manager of an Apple store.

Christy: I’m a UCLA student, I’m about to graduate and I work in a music store right now and I don’t know where it’s gonna take me yet.

PRG: Can people buy the prints, your collages and other pieces through your website?

Christy: Yeah. We’re hoping to display a lot more of our art on the website soon. It’s just getting off the ground right now, but this {APE} has been great inspiration.

Lisa Fary's earliest influences are Princess Leia, Rainbow Bright, Astronaut Barbie, and her 6th grade teacher, Ms. Palmer. She's angry that it's 2011 and she still doesn't have a hovercraft, but will accept a jetpack as consolation. That jetpack had better be pink with a rhinestone monogram.
