Battlestar Galactica: Maelstrom

Battlestar Galactica kills bad girls. If a female on BSG has an entire episode written about her, that’s a good indicator that she’s going to die. Kat died in the only Kat-centric episode of the series. Starbuck died in the Starbuck-centric episode. However, Helo and Admiral Adama didn’t get knocked off in their episodes. Helo got to walk around without a shirt and Adama got to flirt with the President.

Kat and Starbuck weren’t nice girls. They smoked cigars, got in fist fights, had shady pasts. They not only said “frack”, they did some fracking. Dualla, Callie and Laura Roslin all had multiple opportunities to get killed off, and managed to live. But, they’re nice girls, so they get to live through cancer and exposure to open space.

I’ve never understood why Starbuck had to be a screw up. Can’t a woman be a hot shot Viper pilot, have fist fights and smoke cigars and still be a well-adjusted person? Was it really neccessary for her to stab Apollo in the back and then cheat on her husband?

While I can appreciate the bravery of killing off a primary character, there are things surrounding Starbuck’s death that make absolutely no sense. Since season one, there has been this idea that she has a destiny to fulfill and she’s not like other people. This Eye of Jupiter symbol that has shown up in her doodles since she was a kid reinforces that idea.

So, it was her destiny to die? Yes, I know that’s the ultimate destiny for all of us, but from a story telling perspective that doesn’t make sense. Instead of a destiny, she started hallucinating because of the mental strain and she died.

There is still the possibility that Starbuck is a Cylon. That would fit with the idea of her special destiny, but I’d rather have her gone for good than to be a Cylon because, even as screwed up as she was, Starbuck was still one of the most visible strong female characters on television. Making her a Cylon cheapens that.

Can we get a Ship of Lights or some Terrans or something on this show? I used to be amazed and blown away after watching an episode. Now I’m just depressed.

Lisa Fary's earliest influences are Princess Leia, Rainbow Bright, Astronaut Barbie, and her 6th grade teacher, Ms. Palmer. She's angry that it's 2011 and she still doesn't have a hovercraft, but will accept a jetpack as consolation. That jetpack had better be pink with a rhinestone monogram.

Starbuck dies? Damn you US types and your plot-spoilers! We poor old Brit-types have only just seen her and Apollo going 13 rounds with each other (no, not like that – in the boxing ring!) It’ll be sad to see her go, I agree, but maybe Katee Sackhoff just wanted off the series.

Ah well … if she ever wants back in, maybe DC or Marvel will be able to show the series’ producers how to continually resurrect a character (without making them a cylon!)

Sorry!!! The episode already aired here, so I thought it was OK!!!!!

I would like to see her come back in a reasonable way. . . Katee Sackoff doesn’t have much going on right now other than White Noise 2. I can’t see starring in the sequel to a really bad movie as a special destiny.

I’ve only just started watching Battle Star Galactica so when I saw a main character die last night it really made me question whether I should continue watching the show or not.
So..do we know for sure she’s even coming back?

It’s all speculation. Did you start at the beginning of the series or pick up where it is now? If you’re starting at the beginning, I’d suggest sticking with it for a while, because it really is good, even though I complain a lot.

I agree with your analysis completely. They didn’t add anything to the mythos or ongoing storyline. It was a cop out. The one thing we always heard was Starbuck got the job done when it counted and hear it didn’t. It’s nice to move on from Appolo-starbuck but this is a letdown. Probably the low point for the series.

Are we really even reasonably sure she died in the first place? She was chasing a Raider, which may or may not have been real, and she did seem to have her hand on the ejection handle – and even if Lee didn’t see any sign of ejection, he was flying blind at that point anyway.

No thanks. I’m going to wave the No-Body-Clause here. We know Kat died because we were literally at her bedside, but its not so simple with Starbuck. I personally think the Cylons picked her up, pushing her closer to the vague notion of destiny all the while leading to a confrontation between her and Lee at the season’s end.

Sackoff said in an interview yesterday that as far as she knows, Starbuck didn’t eject and is dead. She also said she’s shooting a major pilot for NBC, but can’t say what it is.

She will be back! She has gone a long way to stop now! I hope it made me cry some, guess im a girl! They use cancer alot in this show! True in any age!
