The Podcast Workout Review #1: Lipstick Aliens

The guy next to me at the gym smelled like poop, which not only gross, it distracted me from the Lipstick Aliens podcast. We’ve been wanting to do podcast reviews at Pink Raygun, but between TV and movie commitments, writing commitments and the need to shower, we couldn’t find the time to listen to a podcast. So, the podcasts are joining me for my workout, hence the title of this new column: The Podcast Workout.

Today I listened to episodes 21 and 22 of the Lipstick Aliens podcast, hosted by Cat and Lynne. Lipstick Aliens features scifi from a girl’s perspective, plus they have some funky cool theme music. Pink Raygun hasn’t reached the funky cool theme music stage of existence yet, but when we do, our music will be baaad asssss.

I couldn’t focus at the beginning because of the stinky guy next to me, but it didn’t feel right to just up and switch to another treadmill. My brilliant strategy was to get a drink at the water fountain, then get on another treadmill where there would be a Neutral Zone of odor. Then I could listen to Cat and Lynne fill out their applications for Who Wants to be a Superhero, which had me laughing out loud.

Cat and Lynne mostly talk about what they’re watching, reading or playing. They cover recent episodes of genre television shows, including Battlestar Galactica, Heroes, Lost, Smallville and Doctor Who. They also review movies, most recently Pan’s Labyrinth and Children of Men. The content is all over the place, but it’s fun.

For instance, in episode 21, there was an in depth discussion about Christopher Eccleston’s journey from Doctor Who Hottie to Heroes’ Pigeon Man. Really, what happened to him? Eccleston looked good as the Doctor, and that wasn’t that long ago. In episode 22, there was another discussion about the possibility of Sylar being a zombie. He “eats” brains and, two weeks ago, he seemingly rose from the dead. On the Lipstick Aliens podcast website, the current poll is “What Battlestar crew member would you like to have sex with?”

My only real complaint with Lipstick Aliens is the sound quality. It’s not always steady: sometimes Cat was really loud and I could barely hear Lynne, or the other way around. I had to adjust the volume several times so I could hear over the runner on the next treadmill. He was just a wispy old man; he didn’t look like he could pound a treadmill that loudly.

Lipstick Aliens is a fun podcast, similar in tone to Pink Raygun, and the time goes by quickly. Before I knew it, 383 calories were gone. That’s like a whole slice of pie.

In addition to Lipstick Aliens, Lynne does another podcast titled The Snarky Observer. Cat’s site is Scifi Ranter Girl. Lipstick Aliens has been nominated for a Podcast Peer Award in the category of Best Newbee.

Lisa Fary's earliest influences are Princess Leia, Rainbow Bright, Astronaut Barbie, and her 6th grade teacher, Ms. Palmer. She's angry that it's 2011 and she still doesn't have a hovercraft, but will accept a jetpack as consolation. That jetpack had better be pink with a rhinestone monogram.
